Liga MB Round 15: Metapan lose to San Salvador

Here is the last round review presented by Job Market.

Round in Liga MB means a new league leader. The biggest surprise took place in San Salvador where host San Salvador (11-1) crushed league's leader Metapan (10-2) 103-80 on Monday evening. It ended at the same time the four-game winning streak of Metapan. It was a key game for the top position in the league. San Salvador made 24-of-27 free shots (88.9 percent) during the game. They outrebounded Metapan 51-33 including a 24-9 advantage in offensive rebounds. San Salvador looked well-organized offensively handing out 31 assists. The best player for the winners was Dominican forward Cristian Joan Duran (201-1996, college: Tenn Tech) who had a double-double by scoring 24 points, 18 rebounds and 6 assists. Panamanian Alejandro Scantelbury (199-1993) chipped in 28 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists. San Salvador's coach felt very confident that he used 10 players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. At the other side the best for losing team was Venezuelan point guard Edwin Mijares (186-1992) who recorded 31 points, 6 rebounds and 8 assists. San Salvador have an impressive series of eleven victories in a row. They keep a position of league leader. Metapan at the other side dropped to the second place with two games lost. They share the position with Santa Tecla. They were replaced at the leadership position by San Salvador. Metapan will play next round against Aguila trying to make it back to the top of the standings. San Salvador will try to continue on its current victory against eighth ranked Santiagueno on the road.
Bottom-ranked Cojute managed to get a second victory, breaking the series of nine consecutive losses. This time they edged ninth-ranked Nejapa in Cojutepeque 101-99. It was a good game for American swingman Andravious Smith (196-1995, college: Tougaloo) who led his team to a victory with a triple-double by scoring 43 points (!!!), 13 rebounds and 10 assists. Nestor Avalos contributed with 20 points, 6 assists and 4 steals for the winners. Cojute's coach allowed to play the deep bench players in such tough game. American forward Telvin Gabriel (198-1994, college: Lander) answered with 32 points and 9 rebounds for Nejapa. Cojute (2-11) moved-up to tenth place. Nejapa lost their seventh game in a row. They keep the ninth position with nine games lost. Both teams do not play next round, which will be an opportunity for some rest.
The game in San Vicente was also quite interesting. Third ranked Santa Tecla (10-2) played at the court of 7th ranked Fantasmas (5-7). Santa Tecla defeated Fantasmas 102-88 on Tuesday. It was a great evening for Jose Liriano who led his team to a victory scoring 33 points (!!!) and 9 rebounds. The best for the losing side was Osmel Oliva with 28 points. Both coaches used bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. The victory was the third consecutive win for Santa Tecla. Defending champion moved-up to second place, which they share with Metapan. Loser Fantasmas dropped to the sixth position with seven games lost. They share it with Santa Ana and Santiagueno. Santa Tecla will meet at home Brujos (#4) in the next round. Fantasmas will have a break next round.

Other games of round 15 were quite predictable and ended without any surprises. Here they are:
bottom-ranked Cojute was defeated by Brujos in Izalco 90-74. Chalchuapa was beaten by Santiagueno at home 79-95. Fantasmas won against Santa Ana on the opponent's court 102-87.
The best stats of 15th round was 19 points and 15 rebounds by Henry Sherrod of Fantasmas.

Brujos - Cojute 90-74

There was no surprise in Izalco where 11th ranked Cojute (2-11) was defeated by fourth ranked Brujos (8-4) 90-74 on Tuesday. Brujos outrebounded Cojute 54-33 including a 36-19 advantage in defensive rebounds. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Brujos made 8 blocks. It was a great evening for center Teodoro Romero (202-1985) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 21 points, 28 rebounds and 6 blocks. Maxwel Mendoza helped adding 34 points (!!!), 7 rebounds and 5 assists. The best for the losing side was American swingman Andravious Smith (196-1995, college: Tougaloo) with a double-double by scoring 37 points (!!!), 10 rebounds, 7 assists and 4 blocks and the other American import guard Jordon Myers (201-1998) scored 12 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists. Both coaches used bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. The victory was the sixth consecutive win for Brujos. They maintain fourth place with 8-4 record. Cojute lost their ninth game in a row. They dropped to the tenth position with 11 games lost. Brujos will meet league's second-placed Santa Tecla on the road in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Cojute will have a break next round.

No shocking result in a game when eighth ranked Santiagueno (5-7) defeated on the road bottom-ranked Chalchuapa (1-11) 95-79 on Wednesday. Santiagueno dominated down low during the game scoring 70 of its points in the paint compared to Chalchuapa's 32. They outrebounded Chalchuapa 74-34 including a 35-7 advantage in offensive rebounds. Santiagueno looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists comparing to just 9 passes made by Chalchuapa's players. It was a great evening for American-Colombian center Freddy Asprilla (206-1988, college: Canisius) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 24 points, 37 rebounds and 7 assists. Cuban guard Pedro Roque (187-1995) helped adding 22 points and 11 rebounds. Five Santiagueno players scored in double figures. We cannot really consider it an upset in the game between close teams when 6th ranked Santa Ana (5-7) was defeated at home by seventh ranked Fantasmas (5-7) 102-87 on Wednesday. Fantasmas dominated down low during the game scoring 64 of its points in the paint compared to Santa Ana's 42. They outrebounded Santa Ana 52-39 including 17 on the offensive glass. Fantasmas looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. It was a great evening for Cuban point guard Osmel Oliva (180-1987) who led his team to a victory scoring 27 points, 5 rebounds and 9 assists. Henry Sherrod helped adding 19 points and 15 rebounds (on 9-of-11 shooting from the field). Fantasmas' coach used entire bench saving starting five for next games.
